Cantons · ZG

The city of Zug is the capital of the canton and the seat of the cantonal authorities (§ 24 KV ZG). It is also the largest municipality, with 32'160 residents, ahead of Baar (25'519) and Cham (18'518); the canton had 135'018 residents at 31 December 2025 (BFS). The constitution has no language article, and all municipalities lie in the German language region (BFS).

Since 1 August 2022, the federal narcotics rules for medical cannabis have applied in Zug exactly as in the other cantons (Art. 8 BetmG). Zug enforces them through the Pharmazeutische Abteilung (pharmaceutical department) of the Amt für Gesundheit, the unit of the cantonal pharmacist. The canton also has its own introductory act to the federal Narcotics Act.

Supervision of medicines and narcotics

The Pharmazeutische Abteilung belongs to the Amt für Gesundheit of the Gesundheitsdirektion. It enforces the legal requirements on medicines and narcotics and supervises the persons and businesses that store, manufacture or dispense medicines.

The same federal rules everywhere

  • Since 1 August 2022, physicians may prescribe cannabis medicines without an exceptional authorisation from the BAG (Art. 8 BetmG). Whether treatment is an option is decided individually in the consultation.
  • Medicines with at least 1% total THC are prescribed on the official narcotics prescription, which is valid for one month (Art. 46 and 47 BetmKV). The original paper form has to reach the pharmacy.
  • You choose the pharmacy freely, in your canton or anywhere else in Switzerland (Art. 26 HMG).
