The capital of the canton of Schwyz is not its largest municipality. BFS figures for 31 December 2025 put Freienbach (17'100 residents) ahead of Schwyz (16'735) and Einsiedeln (16'667), out of 170'072 residents in the canton. The official language is German (§ 44 KV SZ).

Since 1 August 2022, the federal narcotics rules for medical cannabis have been the same here as in every other canton (Art. 8 BetmG). Their enforcement is cantonal, and in Schwyz it reaches beyond the canton: the cantonal pharmacist of Schwyz also acts for Uri, Obwalden, Nidwalden and Glarus.

Supervision of medicines and narcotics

The cantonal pharmacist belongs to the Amt für Gesundheit und Soziales of the Departement des Innern. The office supervises the trade in medicines, narcotics and medical devices, as well as pharmacies, drugstores, physician and dental practices, hospital pharmacies, care homes and businesses with a cantonal manufacturing licence.

Good to know

  • Inspections take place when a business opens, changes ownership or manager, moves or is renovated, and periodically about every five years.
  • Schwyz has commissioned the Kantonale Heilmittelkontrolle Zürich to inspect medicine manufacturers and wholesalers.

The same federal rules everywhere

  • Since 1 August 2022, physicians may prescribe cannabis medicines without an exceptional authorisation from the BAG (Art. 8 BetmG). Whether treatment is an option is decided individually in the consultation.
  • Medicines with at least 1% total THC are prescribed on the official narcotics prescription, which is valid for one month (Art. 46 and 47 BetmKV). The original paper form has to reach the pharmacy.
  • You choose the pharmacy freely, in your canton or anywhere else in Switzerland (Art. 26 HMG).

    Appointments are held in German, English or Russian, always with the same physician. Italian is possible for the information call; the language of the consultation is then agreed before the appointment.
