French is the national and official language of the République et Canton du Jura (Cst. JU Art. 3). Parliament and government sit in Delémont (Cst. JU Art. 69), which is also the largest municipality with 12'991 residents; Haute-Sorne (7'532) and Porrentruy (6'597) follow. On 31 December 2025 the canton had a permanent resident population of 75'178 (BFS).

Jura applies the federal Narcotics Act in the same way as every other canton; since 1 August 2022 physicians have been able to prescribe medical cannabis where medically indicated, without an exceptional authorisation from the BAG (Art. 8 BetmG). At cantonal level, the Ordonnance sur les pharmacies, les produits thérapeutiques et les stupéfiants applies (RSJU 812.41), and narcotics control is one of the cantonal pharmacist's tasks.

Supervision of medicines and narcotics

The Pharmacien cantonal, the cantonal pharmacist, belongs to the Service de la santé publique (SSA) in the Département de l'économie et de la santé (DES). As cantonal authority for therapeutic products, the office supervises licensed businesses such as pharmacies, drugstores and opticians, controls narcotics and supervises pharmacists, druggists and opticians.

Good to know

  • The cantonal court and the court of first instance sit in Porrentruy, and the cantonal administration is decentralised (Cst. JU Art. 69).
  • Pharmacists and physicians with an authorised practice dispensary send their annual narcotics stock statement to the Service de la santé publique by 31 January.
  • One municipality, Ederswiler, is in the German language region according to the BFS; French remains the only official language (Cst. JU Art. 3).

The same federal rules everywhere

  • Since 1 August 2022, physicians may prescribe cannabis medicines without an exceptional authorisation from the BAG (Art. 8 BetmG). Whether treatment is an option is decided individually in the consultation.
  • Medicines with at least 1% total THC are prescribed on the official narcotics prescription, which is valid for one month (Art. 46 and 47 BetmKV). The original paper form has to reach the pharmacy.
  • You choose the pharmacy freely, in your canton or anywhere else in Switzerland (Art. 26 HMG).

  • Which languages can I choose for the appointments?

    German, English or Russian; French-speaking patients from the Jura have their appointments in English. The information call can also take place in Italian; the language of the consultation is then agreed before the appointment.

  • Who supervises medicines and narcotics in the Jura?

    The Pharmacien cantonal within the Service de la santé publique (SSA), Département de l'économie et de la santé (DES).

  • Is there a pilot trial in the canton of Jura?

    No. The BAG overview of authorised pilot trials, checked on 20 October 2026, lists none in the canton. Pilot trials are non-medical studies under Art. 8a BetmG and not a route to medical treatment; participants must live in the canton of the trial (Art. 14 BetmPV).
