Basel-Stadt consists of three municipalities. At 31 December 2025, the capital, Basel, had 180'097 of the canton's 204'157 residents, Riehen 22'774 and Bettingen 1'286 (BFS). The official language is German (§ 76 KV BS).
The federal rules for medical cannabis have applied in Basel-Stadt as in every canton since 1 August 2022 (Art. 8 BetmG). Their enforcement is the task of the Pharmazeutischer Dienst (pharmaceutical service) of the Medizinische Dienste, headed by the cantonal pharmacist.
Supervision of medicines and narcotics
The Pharmazeutischer Dienst belongs to the Medizinische Dienste of the Gesundheitsdepartement des Kantons Basel-Stadt. It enforces federal and cantonal law on medicines and narcotics, inspects public pharmacies, hospital pharmacies and drugstores, and issues narcotics permits for institutions, hospitals and care homes.
Pilot trials
According to the BAG overview checked on 20 October 2026, the pilot trial WeedCare is authorised for the canton of Basel-Stadt; the BAG names the canton rather than individual municipalities. It is a non-medical scientific study under Art. 8a BetmG, and participants must live in the canton (Art. 14 BetmPV). WeedCare is separate from medical treatment, and our practice is not involved in it.

The same federal rules everywhere
- Since 1 August 2022, physicians may prescribe cannabis medicines without an exceptional authorisation from the BAG (Art. 8 BetmG). Whether treatment is an option is decided individually in the consultation.
- Medicines with at least 1% total THC are prescribed on the official narcotics prescription, which is valid for one month (Art. 46 and 47 BetmKV). The original paper form has to reach the pharmacy.
- You choose the pharmacy freely, in your canton or anywhere else in Switzerland (Art. 26 HMG).

Is WeedCare a form of medical treatment?
No. WeedCare is a scientific study on non-medical use under Art. 8a BetmG, and consumption for medical reasons is not part of pilot trials. Our practice has no part in it.
Which office supervises pharmacies in Basel-Stadt?

Does the pharmacy have to be in Basel-Stadt?
No. If a prescription is issued, where medically indicated, it is yours and you choose where to fill it, in the canton or outside it (Art. 26 para. 2bis HMG). We have no contracts with any pharmacy; see choosing a pharmacy.
