Liestal is the capital of Basel-Landschaft (§ 40 KV BL) but only its sixth-largest municipality. At 31 December 2025, Allschwil (22'374 residents), Reinach (21'003) and Muttenz (18'308) were the largest, and the canton had 303'872 residents (BFS). The official language is German (§ 57 KV BL).

The federal narcotics rules for medical cannabis have been the same in Basel-Landschaft as in every other canton since 1 August 2022 (Art. 8 BetmG). At cantonal level, the Gesundheitsgesetz (health act) places the cantonal pharmacist in the Amt für Gesundheit, the health office and one of the health services of the Direktion (§ 5 SGS 901).

Supervision of medicines and narcotics

The cantonal pharmacist belongs to the Amt für Gesundheit (AfG), a Dienststelle of the Volkswirtschafts- und Gesundheitsdirektion (VGD) (§ 11 SGS 140.11). Cantonal pharmacists enforce the federal and cantonal law on therapeutic products and narcotics and supervise pharmacies and other dispensing businesses (KAV).

Pilot trials

According to the BAG overview checked on 20 October 2026, the pilot trial Grashaus Projects is authorised in Liestal and Allschwil. It is a non-medical scientific study under Art. 8a BetmG; participants must live in the canton (Art. 14 BetmPV). Grashaus Projects is separate from medical treatment, and our practice is not involved in it.

Good to know

  • Basel-Landschaft does not share this office with Basel-Stadt: each of the two cantons has its own cantonal pharmacist (KAV list of 1 August 2026).

The same federal rules everywhere

  • Since 1 August 2022, physicians may prescribe cannabis medicines without an exceptional authorisation from the BAG (Art. 8 BetmG). Whether treatment is an option is decided individually in the consultation.
  • Medicines with at least 1% total THC are prescribed on the official narcotics prescription, which is valid for one month (Art. 46 and 47 BetmKV). The original paper form has to reach the pharmacy.
  • You choose the pharmacy freely, in your canton or anywhere else in Switzerland (Art. 26 HMG).

Questions about the canton of Basel-Landschaft

  • Is the Grashaus Projects pilot trial connected with medical treatment?

    No. It is a scientific study on non-medical use under Art. 8a BetmG, and consumption for medical reasons is not part of pilot trials. Our practice is not involved in it.

  • Which office does the cantonal pharmacist of Basel-Landschaft belong to?

    The Amt für Gesundheit, a Dienststelle of the Volkswirtschafts- und Gesundheitsdirektion (§ 5 SGS 901; § 11 SGS 140.11).

  • Do I need a pharmacy in Basel-Landschaft?

    No. If the physician issues a prescription where medically indicated, the choice of pharmacy is yours, in the canton or elsewhere (Art. 26 para. 2bis HMG). We have no contracts with any pharmacy.
